studied medicine at the RWTH Aachen and at the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms University in Bonn. He graduated as a Doctor of Medicine. This was followed by specialist training at the Medical Clinic II, University Hospital Aachen. He then worked for several research abroad and after a further specialist training, he became senior physician at the Medical Clinic II in Aachen. In 1997 he was appointed associate professor in the Medical Faculty of the RWTH and beyond that he was appointed chief physician at the Medical Clinic of the Hospital of the Hanseatic city of Stralsund. In 2003 he became Medical Director of the same hospital. By 2010 he was on the supervisory council and worked as head of the medical management committee for the Damp Holding AG. Since early 2011 he is medical director and chairman of the University Hospital Aachen.
